Stewart was assaulted at about 7 p.m. at the Raiders Crossings Apartments on Hazelwood Street, Murfreesboro police said. She was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center, where she died.
Murfreesboro Police arrested her roommate, Shanterrica Madden, 18, a freshman at MTSU, and charged her in connection with the crime.
“There was an argument,” Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said. “During that argument, Madden stabbed the victim.”
Police initially picked up a man and a woman for questioning and were searching for another woman.
“All other people involved have been picked up, and we do not consider them suspects at this time,” Evans said.
Evans said Stewart suffered multiple traumatic wounds. An autopsy will be performed, he said, and investigators are still interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence at the apartments to determine what happened.
Clantina Marie Lapae Stewart, 21, of Memphis, was a 5-foot, 7-inch junior and played guard for the Lady Raiders.
“The team is devastated,” Athletics Director Chris Massaro said. “We will work on this together. One step at a time.”
MTSU President Sidney McPhee, nearly in tears, spoke of knowing the student athlete. He said counselors will be available to help students and others affected by the tragedy.
Stewart’s death comes just four days before the Lady Raiders are scheduled to play their first game in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hot Springs, Ark.
MTSU was scheduled to leave Friday for the tournament. There was no word Wednesday if the travel plans will change.
