Happy New Year 2009

I want to wish all of my email contacts a very Happy New Year.....

As I reflect back on 2008, I can say we had quite a year:

Blacks are happy; Obama was elected.

Whites are happy; OJ is in jail.

Democrats are happy; George Bush is leaving office.

Republicans are happy, Democrats will finally quit saying Bush stole the elections.

All of us are happy that the election is finally over!!

I think 2009 will be even better: Immediately after the inauguration, Obama will balance the budget, revive the economy, solve the real estate problem, solve the auto industry problem, solve our gas/alternative energy problem, stop fires and mudslides in California, ban hurricanes and tornadoes, stop identity theft, reverse global warming, find Osama, solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, get rid of corruption in government and achieve world peace.

Then, on the 7th day, He will rest.

This all just leaves me wondering; just what exactly is he going to do with or to the first tornado or hurricane that violates his ban? Will he send the military to go bomb it? Most likely, he will want to try to sit down and reason with it. Create a dialogue. Listen to it's concerns. As far as finding Osama, he has already been found (see picture below).

Just look in your nearest 7-11!

In all seriousness though, may I remind you that Obama IS NOT the Messiah. He IS NOT the answer to all that is believed to be wrong with America. We are the greatest nation on the planet, and this clown wants to "change" that?? God help us all.

Amy Winehouse serenades new lover

Amy Winehouse serenaded her new man in a hotel bar yesterday (07.01.09).

The troubled singer dedicated her impromptu performance to budding actor Josh Bowman at a Caribbean hotel bar.

A guest at the hotel revealed: "When she finished playing, she rushed over to Josh and was hugging and kissing him. Her voice was amazing. Josh was obviously impressed. They were all over each other."

Amy played the piano and sang to the 25 guests in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Josh, 21, has denied rumours he is romantically involved with the married star after pictures of the couple cuddling in St. Lucia were published this week.

He is said to have told a close friend: "She's a cool girl, very nice, and we're just very friendly. She's a good laugh.

"She's sweet - but just not my type of girl."

Amy and husband Blake Fielder-Civil separated at the end of 2008 after Blake was released from prison for assault and trial-fixing.

Winehouse drops Norwegian appeal

Amy Winehouse has dropped her appeal against a fine for possession of cannabis in Norway.

The singer and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested in Bergen in October 2007 on charges of possessing seven grams of cannabis.

They were held overnight and released after paying a 3,000 kroner (?290) fine. But Ms Winehouse later claimed police had made mistakes in the case.

The pair will now not have to appear in court, police said.

They were initially due to face a trial in March 2008, but it was postponed at the request of Ms Winehouse's lawyer.

Last month, she was summoned to appear at an appeals court in Bergen on 12 January.

"After a careful review of the whole matter, they decided to drop the appeal," lawyer Ole Kvelstad said. He did not give a reason why the appeal was dropped.

Following the incident, Ms Winehouse was denied entry to the US for last year's Grammys ceremony, where she won five awards.

Former champion now a free-agent

Now that Petty Racing is no more and former NASCAR champion Bobby Labonte is a free-agent, its anybody's guess where he will end up for 2009.

Speculation is running rampant. Some have him close to being in the #41 Target Dodge for Gnassi/Earnhardt Racing a.k.a Chip & Dale, while others are floating rumors that have him going back to Joe Gibbs racing to drive a 4th team car.

Labonte won his championship in 2000 driving the #18 Interstate Batteries car for JGR. Back then, the car was a Pontiac. Since then they have switched to Chevy and now JGR uses exclusively Toyota. The #18 car is now driven by Kyle Busch and sponsored by M&M's. JGR also fields the #11 Fed-Ex car driven by Denny Hamlin, and the famous #20 Home Depot car recently vacated by Tony Stewart now driven by Joey Logano. The wonderment about is is, could JGR add a 4th car for Labonte and possibly earn back Interstate Batteries full sponsorship? It's fun to think about, but not likely to happen.

The most likely possibility, at least from where I sit anyway, is him going to Richard Childress Racing to drive their newly announced 4th car, the #33 Cheerios sponsored Chevy. At the begining of the 2008 season, it was announced that General Mills would be removing it's sponsorship of the #43 Dodge owned by Petty Enterprises and driven by Labonte, and taking that sonsorship to RCR in 2009. Many rumors at the time had the driver (Labonte) and the sponsorship being a package deal, both going to RCR in 2009. Labonte though, still had three years on a contract with Petty. Of course we all know happened in December. Labonte was released from his contractual obligations to Petty and Petty Enterprises was sold to Gillette/Everenham Motorsports. This sets the stage for what was rumored last February to actually take place.

Personally, I would love to see it play out this way. RCR has a strong race team. Jeff Burton in the #31 AT&T car, Kevin Harvick in the #29 Shell car, and newcomer Clint Bowyer in the #07 car. All three RCR team cars placed in the Chase for The Sprint Championship in both 2007 & 2008. Adding former champion Labonte to the mix would make RCR even more of a force to be reckoned with on the track. Does anyone remember another famous RCR car that was painted black, had GM Goodwrench as its sponsor, and wore the #3? My point is, RCR has a rich NASCAR championship heritage and the addition of Labonte to the team would only strengthen that legacy.

And, for you naysayers out there who think Labonte should just hang it up and go do something else, forget about it. The boy still has several good years left in him and maybe even another championship or three. The key is getting him on a strong team and in a good car. RCR would without question provide both. He can compete with and outdo any and every other driver out there on any given Sunday with the right equipment and team and if it all works right, he will. It will certainly be interesting to see how it all shakes out and you can bet I will keeping tabs on it.

Update, 1/7/09: I said in a previous paragraph that my favorite and what I believed was the best option was for Labonte to wind up in the #33 car for RCR. A driver has already been selected for that car. Clint Bowyer will be switching from the #07 car to the #33 in 2009. Casey Mears joins RCR and will take over the #07. All of this info is according to NASCAR.com. In addition, NASCAR.co is also showing Reed Sorenson as the driver listed in the former Petty and now GEM car #43 repalcing Labonte. Sorenson drove the #41 for Gnassi Racing which has now merged with DEI and switched from Dodge to Chevy. So, it now looks as if Labonte just may land in the #41 car for Earnhardt/Gnassi. And, that is okay for this Labonte fan, as long he is back in a Chevy and one that can win.

It's Bush's fault

The trouble with our economy is Bush's fault. Global warming is Bush's fault. All the turmoil and trouble abroad is Bush's fault. The bank and automobile companies failing is Bush's fault. If you wake up in the morning and can't find your keys, that will be Bush's fault. If you stub your toe walking through your house in the dark, that's Bush's fault. If you have a flat tire, that's Bush's fault. If you're Internet connection runs painfully slow, that must be Bush's fault as well.

Since it has become so fashionable to blame President Bush for all the world's problems, I thought I would have a little fun with the ridiculous notion that everything that goes wrong is his fault. It must be a sad, pathetic existence to go around hating someone enough to blame them for so much bad stuff. To be so wrapped up in blind hatred that it clouds ones ability to think clearly.

Our economic problems are not Bush's fault. In fact, blame for the high rate of foreclosures and bank failures can be laid directly at the feet the Clinton Admininstration. It was legislation he proposed and got passed that forced banks to make all these bad loans. yet still, somehow this is Bush's fault??

Global warming isn't even a legitimate crisis. Just more fearmongering tactics so Al Gore and others can line their pockets. The truth is, the Earth goes through cycles of warming and cooling. It is normal and natural and IS NOT man made. It is simply the Earth functioning exactly the way God, and yes I said God, designed and created it to function. So remember, when the Earth's average overall temperature rises another blistering degree, or when it drops a degree or two and these same fearmongers are trying to make us believe another ice age is eminent, it will all be Bush's fault.

It takes very few functioning brain cells if any at all to come up with something so lame as to blame Bush for all the world's problems. It takes even fewer to buy into all that rhetoric and follow in lock-step with it and join the blame game. No, President Bush hasn't done everything right. That's called being human and prone to make mistakes. And guess what. I hate to burst all of your bubbles out there, but this new guy coming into office, you know, the one that 67 million Americans DID NOT vote for but he managed to get elected anyway, he is human and will make mistakes too. Despite what some were led to believe, Obama IS NOT the Messiah. There has only been one Messiah and His Name is Jesus. Perhaps you've heard of Him??

Don't be fooled people. Whatever is wrong in America, in the world, and even in your personal life is not Bush's fault. Man up or woman up and realize that some of the problems might even be your own fault and take responsibility for them. Don't expect others to bail you out of the mess you're in. And, in case you are still looking to Obama to be your Saviour from all that's wrong in the world, you need to know that his Marxist/Socialist ideas and policies will make things worse not better. Turn on what few functioning brain cells you have left and give it some thought.

A truly sad day in NASCAR

As the sun was setting on another year, it was also setting on the one of the longest running sports dynasties. Yesterday, New Year's Eve 2008, Petty Racing Enterprises completed it's final lap. The organization founded by Lee Petty in 1949 was absorbed by Gillette-Everenham Motorsports. Lack of sponsorship and the resources necessary to compete effectively in the sport in which its name had become synonymous led to the sale to GEM. In 2009, for the first time in 6 decades, the name Petty will not be active in any NASCAR competition. It is truly a sad time for NASCAR.

Lee's son Richard rose to the top eventually becoming known as "The King" of NASCAR. Richard Petty won 7 Cup Championships, a feat that has only been matched once, by Dale Earnhardt who won his 7th championship in 1994. Richard Petty won an incredible 27 of 48 races in 1967 including 10 in a row. Another record that will most likely remain untouched. In a five year span that ended in 1971 Petty and his famous #43 car visited victory lane an unprecedented 81 times. In its storied history, Petty Enterprises racked up a total of 268 wins, 890 top 5's, 1269 top 10's, led 61,574 laps, and won 9 Daytona 500's.



Most of the 268 victories can be credited to Lee and Richard Petty, but there were other drivers who contributed who were not family members. In 1970 a relatively unknown New England driver named Pete Hamilton won the Daytona 500 driving Petty's #40 car. Hamilton won three of the 18 races that someone other than a Petty won for the team. Richard Petty retired in 1992. The last victory for Petty Enterprises came in 1999 and John Andretti was the driver.


Kyle Petty, Richard's son became the third generation of Pettys debuting at Talladega in 1979. Kyle's son Adam made it four generations when he made his debut at Texas in 2000. He finished 40th in that race. Tragedy hit the family and the race team hard though that same year. Three day's after Adam's first race, his great-grandfather Lee Petty died of complications following surgery. One month after that, Adam was killed in a crash during practice for a Busch Series race at New Hampshire. The Pettys both as a family and as a race team never really recovered after that.

Now, just 8 years later, the end has come to the organization whose name has become synonomous with NASCAR. In 2008 Petty Enterprises sold the majority of the race team's interest to the private equity firm Boston Ventures. Also in 2008, General Mills, long-time sponsor of Petty's flagship #43 car announced they were taking their sponsorship to Richard Childress Racing in 2009 leaving the Petty Dodge unsponsored. At the end of the season Petty Enterprises began laying off people and Kyle Petty announced that he was no longer with the organization that proudly bore his family name for 60 years. Not long after that, former champion Bobby Labonte, driver of the #43 for 3 seasons, was released from his contract and talks began to incorporate the famous #43 in to Gillette Everenham Motorsports.

As a NASCAR fan since childhood and a fan of the Pettys for just as long, I am saddened by this turn of events. NASCAR has become more of a business now than a competitive sport. The true sportsmen and competitors who are under capitalized are being squeezed out by big money business types who care more about dollar signs than checkered flags. I will continue to watch the sport I love and follow my favorite driver (Bobby Labonte). Only, I will do so with a knowing that the sport will never be the same without the Pettys' name and influence. NASCAR isn't really NASCAR without the Pettys.
