Denver Cuello knocks out Thai opponent in 9th Round

WBC International minimumweight titlist Filipino boxer Denver "The Excitement" Cuello stunned Thai contender Samat Chaiyong with a 9th-round technical knockout and thus winning the fight held at the Ynares Gym in Angono, Rizal on March 26.

Samat used the entire ring to circle out of harm’s way but Cuello caught up with him in the fourth, landing a series of powerful lefts to the Thai’s head.

The Thai tried everything to stop Cuello’s attack in the fifth to eighth rounds but got trapped in a corner in the ninth and absorbed a hail of punches, forcing referee Bruce McTavish to stop the fight.

Denver Cuello, 24, suffered a loss by disqualification in his fight against Juan Hernandez last year.

Undefeated superbantamweight Ernie Sanchez beat Jog Alim via an eighth round TKO in the main supporting bout.

Alim hit the deck in the opening round but slowly worked his way back into the fight, only to fall anew in the eighth after a series of shots by Sanchez.

Philippine Azkals Hottie #3: Mark Drinkuth (Bio and Pictures)

Philippine Azkals Hottie #3: Mark Drinkuth (Bio and Pictures)

Since they are really getting popular not just in the Philippines but in neighboring countries as well after the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, I thought of compiling the bios and photos of the good looking team members of the Philippine National Football team who call themselves "The Azkals" (Philippine Azkals). Expect to find a post like this in the coming days. Here is Noypistuff's third installment of the Philippine Azkals Hottie series:

Mark Drinkuth

Age: 19

Birthday: June 12

Hometown: Dusseldorf, West Germany

Position: Midfielder; striker

Dating status: Taken

How long have you been in your relationship? I’ve been with my girlfriend for five years now.

When did you start playing football? I was 4.

How did you start? Who got you into it? My father. He also used to play football, and he would take me to watch the games and play with me. Football is very big in Germany, so it’s really not uncommon.

What’s your guilty pleasure? I go to the cinema, watch movies. I also go shopping, hang out, maybe eat.

What do you like eating? That’s hard. Maybe pizza.

Do you go to the Philippines often? The last time I was here was six years ago. But I plan to come here more often now.

What do you like most about the Philippines? The people! All of them are very warm and friendly. They say hi to you, and they smile at you even if you don’t know them at all. They’ve been very welcoming to all of us, everyone is nice. It’s not like that in Germany.

What advice can you give aspiring Pinoy football players? Just practice and work really hard on what you love.

Nonito Donaire, Jr., Chino Trinidad feud heats up online!

Boxing champ Nonito Donaire Jr. and sportscaster Chino Trinidad are currently involved in a very serious "Online war". Comparing this to the celebrity feuds happened in the microblogging site Twitter we witnessed in the past, I would have to say that I have never heard an argument this intense.

After a rift which lasted for 3 years, The Filipino Flash finally reconciled with his father, Nonito, Sr. However another feud sparked when Chino Trinidad fought back via Twitter after he and his father were especially named by Nonito and his family to be the reason of the misunderstanding inside the Donaire family.

On a video posted on the the official website of Nonito Donaire, Jr., his wife, Rachel, said,

“There are certain people in the media who have gotten fame from tearing our family apart and I think that collectively today, after seeing everything that has been out in the media and talking about what has really hurt us, the source is all the same—it’s all the media.

“So, to those people that thought that they gonna ruin the family and watch us destroy and burn ourselves. To Chino Trinidad, Recah Trinidad, to Anthony Andales, and to Granville Ampong, you’re not gonna destroy the Donaire family. And you better go find another tsismis to go, actually, bring any more hits to your site. Because what you did was unprofessional, it’s digusting, and it’s unlike a Filipino.”

Through Facebook, Nonito, Jr also released his statement on the matter, again naming the Trinidads and other sportswriters,

“Chino, Pinol, n Ampong. Shut up n Leave my family alone: the Donaires n Marcials, esp my wife. Keep talking n ull feel what Montiel felt. U won’t see it, ull just feel it. Sonic Boom!!”

“Oh n btw, Chino, Ampong, n Pinol- Why dont u cm pick a fight with sm1 ur on size huh? ME AND PAPANG also said it was the media. We ALL pointed at U! So back off.”

The statements made Chino Trinidad to fire back and air his side. Via Twitter he said,

“Funny how Mr. And Mrs. Donaire are so afraid of the ghost they created. If they aint stupid enough, maybe they would know that I don’t even have a byline. Maybe they can blame Facebook and Twitter. ”

“Nonito Jr. I am not gonna fight you atop the ring but one thing I know, I will never runaway from a good fight.”

“Nonito Jr, you better ask your a coward of a father in law who used your mother in laws FB account in maligning my character for merely posting a story on your celebrated feud then your tigas t_t_ (read in street lingo as duwag) biyenan after seeing the reaction of my FB friends removed me from his wife’s FB friends but not before the whole whole world saw who the real Gerry Marcial is.

“Kung matapang ka talaga Nonito Jr., alam mo kung saan mo ako makikita. Hihintayin kita. Gaguhin mo na ang lahat- huwag lang ang pangalan namin Hindi ako natatakot sa isang hikain at iyakin. Madami na akong nakita na kagaya mo in this lifetime…”

This is not at all good. I hope they'll talk soon and figure things out. :(

Nonito Donaire crushes Fernando Montiel, bags bantamweight crowns

The "Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire now barges into superstardom after a sensational win against Mexican world champion Fernando Montiel in a batamweight fight held on February 19 (February 20, Philippine Time), 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Donaire finished off the fight early by landing a devastating counter left hook to the head that sent Montiel on his back, legs twitching, two minutes into the second round. The then undefeated Montiel got up but Donaire went for the kill prompting the referee to stop the bout at the round's 2:25 mark.

"I needed to be strong but it was the speed that was the key. He left himself open and that gave me the advantage," Donaire said. "I was surprised he got up after I landed that flush shot.", the new champion added.

According to Top Rank promotions via Twitter, Montiel "was sent to the hospital to be checked due to the way he was knocked out."

The technical knockout win hailed Donaire as the new WBO and WBC bantamweight champ.

After this 25th consecutive win, the 28 year-old Donaire improved his record to 26-1 with 18 KOs. While, Montiel fell to 44-3-2.

James Jones wins 3-Point Shootout | 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend

The Miami Heat forward, James Jones invaded the Footlocker 3-Point Shootout Contest in the NBA All-Star 2011 held on Saturday, February 19th in Los Angeles, California. Jones emerged victorious despite the presence of two of the best 3-point shooters of the league, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics.

Jones outscored 'sharpshooters' Allen and Pierce and the rest of the contestants. He made a total score of 20 points - Allen got 15. He shared to the media that he felt no pressure in shooting the balls beyond the three-point arc and that he was comfortable in that zone and happy to compete with great players in the NBA.

Shortly after the game, Mike Trudell, a Lakers reporter, posted on Twitter that it was like "Miami beats Boston for the first time this season."

Quoting sportswriter Ryan Rudnansky, "Is this an ominous sign that the Heat will surpass the Celtics as the Beast from the East this year?"

A few moments after, Hizon went down on his knees saying, “Will you make me the happiest man in the world and be Mrs. Vince Hizon?”

The video of it was recently uploaded on Youtube which gained more than 50 thousand hits after 2-3 days.

Philippine Azkals Hottie #2: Neil Etheridge (Bio and Pictures)

Since they are really getting popular not just in the Philippines but in neighboring countries as well after the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, I thought of compiling the bios and photos of the good looking team members of the Philippine National Football team who call themselves "The Azkals" (Philippine Azkals). Expect to find a post like this in the coming days. Here is Noypistuff's second installment of the Philippine Azkals Hottie series:

Neil Leonard Dula Etheridge

Age: 20

Birthday: Feb. 7, 1990

Birthplace: Enfield, England

Dating status: Single

Position: Goalkeeper

How did you get started in football? I’ve always played football. It is usual for most children in England to grow up playing football; it’s our No. 1 sport. I just enjoyed it, that’s why I stuck with it.

How did it feel to be part of the Philippine team? It was a great experience for me, and it was great to be a part of the team that made history, and made football a part of the Philippines. I feel that we have put one foot in the door, and we plan to keep doing what we do to make sure we can please everyone watching.

What’s the best thing about football? It’s a social, competitive game loved by so many all over the world. I guess that’s why it’s called “the world’s game.”

Describe yourself in one sentence. Fun, exciting, chilled out, social and loud with an open experimental attitude, willing to listen and learn and to give advice to others.

What do you do when you’re not playing football? Shopping, seeing my friends, PlayStation, and eating! (Laughs).

What’s the most unique thing about you? I have an obsession with looking at my phone and contacting everyone at all times, but in the Philippines, this seems like a common thing, so maybe it’s just me. (Laughs).

What’s the sweetest thing a girl has ever done for you? I think the sweetest thing a girl has ever done for me was to surprise me. She told me that we were going to dinner, then the next thing I knew I was watching a live concert, with a late meal.

What’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever done for a girl?

I think it would have to be taking her shopping, buying her clothes and some jewelry, then after, a romantic candlelit dinner along the river.

What’s your biggest passion? Football, of course, would be one. And life in general. I have a different, maybe interesting, way of looking at things. I like to live life, enjoy it, but also take it seriously, as you never know what’s around the corner. I always work hard in everything I do, and I’m always looking to live and learn about new things.

How do you deal with your fawning fans? I like to keep them entertained, and I like to keep in touch with them on Twitter as much as possible. It’s hard with the time difference, but I do like to interact with as many fans as I can, as they like to know what I’m doing and ask me questions.

Where will we see you next? Next for me would be to contract myself with Fulham for a few more years and make some more appearances for the First Team at Fulham. Also, I would love to help the Philippine National Team move forward in the direction they are moving in.
