Sony to Halt Production of MiniDisc Walkmans; is CD Walkman Next?
Sony has announced that will no longer continue producing MiniDisc Walkmans. This comes after the company also ceased production to cassette Walkmans late last year. According to Japanese business daily The Nikkei, Sony plans on stopping the operations as early as September this year. The reason is obvious: Nobody is buying MiniDisc Walkmans anymore.
The first MiniDisc Walkman, the Sony MZ1 (pictured), was introduced on Japan in 1992, 13 years after the first cassette Walkman. MDs may still be popular in Japan, but it never really gained a foothold anywhere outside the country, moreso the Walkmans that play them.
Despite this aging medium, Sony claims that is has managed to sell 22 million MiniDiscs worldwide through March 2011. The company will continue to produce the discs even after September (as long as people buy them, I suppose).
And before you ask, no. Sony plans to keep on producing CD Walkmans.
