Morning Chatter
What we're hearing
Need to know:

Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, has resigned. Brooks was the paper's editor between 2000 and 2003, during which time murder victim Milly Dowler's phone was hacked. News Corp. is to take out national press adverts this weekend to apologize for what it described as "the wrongdoings at the News of the World."

Want to know:

It's finally raining. Heavy rains have hit the Somali capital of Mogadishu, where thousands of dought-stricken families have converged looking for food. Parts of the Horn of Africa are experiencing their driest periods in 60 years, pushing the numbers needing aid to beyond 10 million. Dull but important:

Ninety European banks are eagerly awaiting their test results. They are hoping the publication of stress tests will convince the markets that the global financial system can withstand big shocks like a possible Greek debt default. European banks hold billions in bonds from financially troubled governments. A default or other losses on those bonds could hurt banks and choke off credit to businesses. (Read more: If it seems like the world is falling apart, that's because it is.)

Just because:

Search enginges are changing the way memory works. A study found lower rates of recall on newly-learned facts when students thought those facts were saved on a computer for later recovery. If you think a fact is conveniently available online, then, you may be less apt to learn it.

The wait it over. Spotify is headed to the U.S.

Wacky:

Mexican soldiers were patrolling in Baja California when they spotted something out of the ordinary - a huge marijuana field. The 300-acre field could be the largest ever detected in Mexico. The plantation is four times larger than the previous record discovery by authorities at a ranch in northern Chihuahua state in 1984.

Fun photos of the day: Rare photos from the other side of the Berlin Wall.
