Paz Vega was born on January 2, 1976, in Seville, the Spanish town famous for Carmen and singing barbers. The slender and athletic Paz first dreamed of being a sports star and later took interest in politics. At age 15, all it took was a day at the theater to cement her ambitions; a performance of La Casa de Bernarda Alba set her sights on acting for good.

At 16, Paz left school and patiently waited for the prestigious Centro Andaluz de Teatro acting school to accept her. After two years at the acting school and another two studying journalism, Paz moved to Madrid, where she sought fame. She changed her name to Paz Vega (her grandmother's last name) and worked in bars while auditioning for every acting job she could.

His film would be provocative, steamy and sensual, so he needed just the right actress. In 2001, Lucia y el sexo (Sex and Lucia) hit theaters. It told the story, in graphic and lurid detail, of an innocent girl who slowly discovers her sexuality. Paz appeared nude, acting with her whole body in a gush of sensuality. Sex and Lucia became an international hit and won Paz a Goya, Spain's biggest movie award, for Best New Actress.

With the success of Sex and Lucia, Vega was courted by the biggest names in the film industry. The $25,000 cell phone call.

It has come to my attention that a guy was fined $25,000 recently for not complying with a flight crew member's request that he turn off his cell phone while on the plane on a flight from Austin to Dallas. The airline in question here was Southwest. Now, I know they have the right to have their rules, and that's fine, but there should be room for exceptions.

The man was on the phone with a doctor at the hospital where his dad lay dying. They were discussing whether or not to resuscitate him. It was literally a life or death matter that could not wait until the plane landed. Rules are rules, I get that, but this extenuating circumstance clearly called for an exception. Southwest not only could have, but should have made an exception and given the guy a break. It was their moral obligation and duty to do so.

What about the safety of the other passengers and the crew you ask? Thank you for asking. That is a valid question and an important consideration. The REAL question we must ask ourselves though is do we want to fly on something that could quite possibly be easily brought down by something as small as a cell phone? Or better yet, do we want to spend our hard-earned travel dollars with an airline whose officials are clearly too stupid properly carry out a zero tolerance policy? For me, then answer to both questions is a resounding NO!! Stupid truly is and stupid does, and in this case Southwest Airlines did a ginormous piece of stupid!!

A tale of two cities that got it right.

This is a tale of two cities that got it 100% spot on right in their mayoral elections held this past Saturday. The first one is Irving Texas whose voters decided to reward incumbent Herbert Gears with another term. Gears is widely known in these parts for instituting a policy where illegal immigrants who commit other violations are deported. At one point, the deportations were numbering around 300 per month. Now that's making a difference!! Fortunately Irving voters were smart enough to allow Gears to continue making a positive impact on his community.

Next is Farmers Branch. This is the town where City Councilman Tim O'Hare introduced legislation to prohibit employers in Farmers Branch fro hiring illegal immigrants, landlords from renting to illegals, and that would also have made English the official language of the city. For almost 2 years now the liberal broadcast and print media have been telling us how no one in Farmers Branch wants this to pass, and if someone popped up who did, they were cast as being fringe lunatic, hate-mongers. Saturday, Farmers Branch voters gave the media and all of the immigration law's detractors a big "up yours" by overwhelmingly electing Tim O'Hare as their next mayor. The vote wasn't even close, 64% to 36%. As usual, the media got it wrong.

Never underestimate the voters. The general public, for the most part, is smarter than the media. The rule of law prevailed over law breaking and those who condone and support it. That is as it should be. Character and integrity triumphing over lawlessness. And, I would also like to give an honorable mention to the voters in Carrollton Texas who removed their mayor who was a proven, documented liar. May 10, 2008 was a great day for the electoral process in Texas!! Let's just hope the trend continues and carries over to the national election in November. Our nation's future depends on it!!

A great one lost

Our loss is Heaven's gain with this past Sunday's passing of legendary gospel singer Dottie Rambo. Ms. Rambo, 74, was en route to a Mother's day concert at Fountain of Life Church in North Richland Hills Texas when her tour bus crashed into an embankment near Mt. Vernon Missouri, killing Ms. Rambo and injuring 6 others on board. She was a driving and powerful force in gospel music and was loved by many. She will be missed not only by her friends and family, but also by her fans.

I am not and never have been a fan of the gospel music genre, tending to gravitate more towards contemporary Christian/Christian rock music as opposed to traditional gospel. That being said, even I recognize the impact Ms. Rambo's music and ministry have had over the years. This is a huge loss.

Even though I have never had the privilege of meeting Ms. Rambo, I know I will one day. She is now in Heaven with her beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who also happens to be my Lord and Savior. That's why I know I will meet her one day. We will both spend eternity in the same place. You can join us there too if you like. There are only two options as to where you will spend eternity, Heaven or Hell. The choice of destinations is yours and yours alone.
