If the Dallas Cowboys are America's Team then you would think their 39 year home, Texas Stadium would be America's Stadium. Apparently not since it was imploded yesterday at 7AM. What a waste. All the memories of the glory days of the NFL and all of the great players, Cowboys and otherwise who set foot on that field, gone in a puff of smoke in just a few seconds. Twenty one years after Jerry Jones destroyed the team, the City of Irving destroyed their former home.
Not since the death of Tom Landry has there been a sadder day for Cowboys fans. Except for the move to Arlington possibly. The only other moment that comes close to being as sad was when Jerry Jones purchased the team and uncerimoniously fired Tom Landry who up until that time was the only coach the Cowboys had ever had. And, in my humble opinion he still is the only real, decent, and quality coach they have ever had.
Jerry Jones has made it clear by his actions over and over that he cares not one whit about the Cowboys history or legacy. All he cares about is more zeros on his bank statement. If that were not true, he would have stayed in Irving, in Texas Stadium and made the needed upgrades or repairs.
I blame the City of Irving too for this travesty. They owned the stadium and property on which is sat. They could have recycled the building. Used it as a venue for Irving High School sports or something. Re-named it Landry Field maybe. After all it was the house that Tom built. But sadly, they apparently don't give a rat's posterior about the history and legacy of the stadium either.
Sunday April 11, 2010, a sad day in sports history, NFL history, and Dallas Cowboy's history. Farewell old friend. I will miss seing you as I drive up and down Loop 12 or across Hwys. 183 and 114. It just won't seem right to look over and not see you sitting there.
