From a supermarket parking lot in Arkansas comes the story of a woman who had to be rescued from her locked car by paramedics. A customer had seen the woman sitting with her eyes closed and her hands behind her head. When asked if she was okay, the woman weakly answered "I've been shot in the head and I'm holding my brains in." When paramedics arrived they broke in and carefully began to remove the woman. They found that she had biscuit dough on the back of her head and in her hands. Apparently, in the heat of the car, a can of biscuits exploded with a "bang!" and hit the woman in the back of the head. When she grabbed the back of her head and felt the dough, she passed out from fear, thinking it was her brains. As she came to, she kept her hands on the back of her head, using all of her concentration to hold in her "brains" until the paramedics arrived.
we are all more like this woman than we even realize. She was so afraid that what may have, might have, could have happened, that she was afraid to move. We sit paralyzed with fear. What if? What if? What if? In this woman's case, what if my brains are falling out? In Matthew 25 Jesus tells of a man who was afraid. He went out and buried a talent in the ground because he was afraid of what might happen if he did not. The master was not pleased. Neither is Jesus pleased with us when we become stagnant out of fear. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)
